We all know how important it is to get up out of bed every day and be able to stretch our muscles and joints.

That oh so wonderful feeling after that first yawn, while your body gets calibrated and ready for the day ahead of you.  Do you ever wonder why your body cracks and pop when stretching your joints?  It's simple!  Think about a car engine that's been sitting in the garage for 2 weeks while you're on vacation.  You need to start and run it for some minutes to get all its parts lubricated with oil and warmed up before you drive it. That's what stretching and yawning does for us.

It is often taken for granted how important it is to be able to get up and walk or move to do everything you need or desire.  This is often not truly appreciated, until that one day when you have an injury or simply wearing down of body parts.  This also limits or disables you from doing what you want and love to do.  A board licensed physical therapist offers a solution to restoring motion, pain reduction and quality of life.

Are you looking for a possible alternative to surgery and/or pain medication?  Then consider a physical therapist.  Physical therapists can help you avoid painful, invasive and expensive surgery, in many instances.  Pursuing an exercise program designed by a physical therapist can be one of the best protections from injury and surgery.  Further more if you want to simply return to moving and doing all your daily tasks, fun hobbies, sports, and simply enjoying life then physical therapy is one of the best and conservative options.

A physical therapist can help reduce and manage pain, including low back pain, which affects approximately 80 percent of Americans during their lifetime.  The Spine Journal from July 2008 states that Physical therapy that mobilizes the spine along with specific exercises can help alleviate the pain and can have long lasting effects.   In the February 2007 edition of the journal Circulation it states if you are at risk of heart disease, the American Heart Association encourages seeing a physical therapist for the initial treatment of pain resulting from tendinitis/bursitis, degenerative joint problems (osteoarthritis), and inflammatory joint problems (rheumatoid arthritis), rather than prescription pain medication.   The APTA further cited that research shows individuals who receive active physical therapy experience greater improvement in function and decreased pain intensity.

Reducing Your Risk of Injury

Have you ever suffered an injury from playing sports, a trip and fall, after making a sudden awkward movement with your back or neck, or while trying to lift something heavy?  Physical therapists can help you move freely again with reduced pain and discomfort and feeling renewed.  They can also help you prevent an injury altogether.

While playing a round of golf or simple house chores may seem harmless, but these everyday activities can result in injury due to abnormal movement, stress on joints and strain on muscles.  Since physical therapists are experts in knowing how the body works, they are able to design personalized treatment plans to reduce the risk of injury whether in everyday activities or sports.

Improve Balance and Prevent Falls

Have you or someone you know ever fallen and suffered a broken bone or other traumatic muscle or joint injury?  If you answered yes then you are a perfect candidate for a balance and fall prevention screen.

Falls among the elderly are prevalent, dangerous, and can diminish their ability to lead an active and independent life. According to the National Aging Council, about one in three seniors above age 65,  and nearly one in two seniors over age 80, will fall at least once this year.

The truth of the matter is people have accidents and falls at any age due to lack of conditioning and reaction time.

A physical therapist can help you prevent falls by assessing and designing an individualized program of exercises and activities with an emphasis on strength, flexibility, and proper gait.  Balance may be improved with exercises that strengthen the ankle, knee, and, hip muscles or with exercises that improve the function of the vestibular system if indicated.

How Do I Know If I Qualify For Physical Therapy?

It is easy to access physical therapy for professional care.  In the state of Florida you can make an appointment with a physical therapist directly, without a physician’s referral. There is currently a 30 consecutive day access period for individuals without insurance or instead of the delay and limits of insurance authorization, to receive cash based services without the need of a prescription.  If full recovery is not achieved in those 30 days the individual will need to be referred to a medical doctor for a medical exam to rule out any underlying problems. However, most insurance carriers do require a prescription or referral from a medical physician before they will pay for physical therapy services.  Hence insurance often delays an individuals ability to receive immediate care and faster results, without waiting for authorization and limitations of quality providers to choose from.

There are also health and fitness maintenance services provided by a physical therapist, which are not covered by most insurance.

Examples are:

  1. Musculoskeletal posture and balance screenings,
  2. strengthening and fitness programs,
  3. myofascial and joint massage treatments, and
  4. wellness membership programs.

These programs are designed to get you on the right track and help you maintain a healthy active lifestyle.
